If you love fashion and you want to get a career in this industry then you need to know that it is an incredibly competitive and challenging industry to work in, and to get into. To help you out we have a couple of tips which fashion guru Misha Kaura shared with us about the kind of things which you need to be doing in order to get yourself a start in this industry. It won’t be easy and you will have to work incredibly hard, but if you think that you have the talent and the work ethic to do it, here is how to get started.
Study
In terms of what to study you could go down the root of studying art and design or in some cases you can actual study fashion at university. The benefits of this is that you may get a foothold in the industry much easier. The downside of this is that you may lose time whilst studying which you could put towards launching your career, the upside is of course that you can rely on guidance and advice which can help you in the future.
Social Media
Social media is a great place to showcase what you can do and it is also a great way to raise a groundswell of support without actually having a job in the industry. Many designers are now doing this and they are creating outstanding products, launching themselves on social media and then amassing a huge following. When this happens the fashion brands have no other option but to stand up and take notice, because they will be able to see the huge amount of popularity that you have.
Sending Designs
A great way to have your designs noticed is to send them out for free to a models and to influencers who can help to give you a springboard from which to launch your career. For example if you design dresses then you could create a batch of 20 and send them out for free to social media personalities and even to celebs, if they wear that dress on their social media channels or in public then you could hit the big time.
Applying For Jobs/ Cold Calling
Fashion jobs are sometimes posted as vacancies but not always, there are a number of jobs boards online which you could use to try and find yourself a position, in the main you may have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Another great way to get your foot in the door would be to simply cold call fashion houses, offer to work for free or for a low salary and try to charm your way into the industry. Remember that any job is a great start because once you are in, you can start to make contacts and network so that hopefully you can do more in the future.
