First Time Dog Owner Checklist: Everything You Need to Know

Because people who have pets are generally happier than people without pets, you might be thinking that it’s time to get a dog.

But what are some things you need to know as a first time dog owner and what are the best dog care tips? Here is a first time dog owner checklist of important things to be aware of when bringing your furry friend home for the first time.

1. Training

One of the first things you want to do is train your dog. If you’re getting a puppy, they probably don’t have much, if any, training, so you’ll need to train a dog how to use the bathroom outside and other basic commands.

Training a dog is the best way to ensure that your dog listens to you and you avoid any messes or chaos within your home.

2. Adjustment Period

When you’re bringing a dog home, there will be an adjustment period. Some dogs may be just fine with their new surroundings, but others will need to take their time. If they’re coming from a shelter, they may be scared and find places to hide or exhort nervous behavior.

You will need to be patient with your dog as they adjust to their new environment and learn to trust you. It’s ok if this takes some time, and don’t push your dog to do things if they feel uncomfortable.

3. Dog Essentials

More dog care tips include stocking up on all of the essentials. Dog essentials include things like food, water and food dishes, toys, training treats, crates, gates, collars, leashes, dog bed, bathing products, and anything else that’s necessary for your dog.

The one factor you want to consider is the type of food your dog will need. Not all dogs will eat, or need to eat, the same kind of dog food, so find a food that’s geared toward your dog’s size, breed, and nutritional needs. Good food is important for your dog’s health. If you want to learn more about healthy food for your dog, be sure to read these Badlands Ranch Superfood Complete Reviews.

4. Find A Great Vet

Dogs need to see doctors, too, for things like check-ups, vaccinations, and emergencies like a sickness. Find a vet that’s close to you and that you can communicate with. Do some research or ask your friends with pets which vet they see and why.

Having a great vet is an important part of how to look after a pet dog because it ensures that their quality of life is well.

5. Socialization

If your dog is the only dog in your home, you might want to consider ways to socialize them with other dogs. You can do this by joining a dog park or participating in a dog meet-up. Not only does socializing allow your dog to meet with other dogs, but it offers exercise as well.

If you’re unsure how your dog will respond to other dogs, take socialization slow and start with one or two dogs at a time.
